PHFS Youth Prepare for Success!

Northern Virginia Urban League
From the Urban League website:
"The Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network (YPN) focuses on training, developing and educating young professionals to take leadership roles within the Urban League, the civil rights movement, and society-at-large. Members are defining, developing, implementing, and leading the next generation civil rights agenda."
YPN is working with the Patrick Henry Family Shelter, implementing the "Young Professionals of Tomorrow" program.  Volunteers from YPN work with children ages 7 to 13 to inspire and prepare them for a bright, professional future.  Focusing on life skills and character-building, YPN introduces our youth to the same ideas our adults are learning, giving them a head start on a successful future.  For more information, visit:

The Katherine K. Hanley Shelter Realizes a Dream!
Jack and Jill Playhouse at KFHS
On Saturday, September 7th, the Jack and Jill chapter of Northern Virginia sponsored a "Dreams Do Come True Day" at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter.  The day's events were centered around the inauguration of a beautiful new playhouse as part of the shelter's playground and also included fun activities like tie dye, stepping stone construction, artistic activities and great food.  Community involvement in the day's events was overwhelming.  Benny Chavez Home Improvement constructed the playhouse.  The Silver Diner of Springfield donated dinner.  Home Depot of Springfield and Alexandria donated supplies.  Betty's Azalea Ranch provided landscaping services.  The Big Red Clown Company brought clowns, face-painters and a balloonist for the day.  The African American Writers Guild hosted a special poetry program for the shelter's teens and pre-teens.

Shelter House is deeply grateful to Jack and Jill of NoVa for their hard work and dedication to helping homeless families.

Permanent Housing Success
The Story of a Determined Family

Bill and Maria*, a married couple with a newborn came to the United States  from their home country in search a better future.  The couple had obtained college degrees in their home country and had professional jobs, but upon their arrival to the U.S., they were faced with unemployment and homelessness.  While residing in the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter, the family met weekly with a Housing Resource Coordinator, Case Manager and Employment Specialist.  After a determined search, both Bill and Maria obtained and maintained employment.  Both individuals attended our Money Management program to learn how to make the most of their income.  After several months of being employed, they managed to save several thousand dollars to use towards housing.  This family moved into permanent housing successfully and continued to participate in Community Case Management.
This family has been able to maintain housing and is pursuing the possiblity of returning to school to further their education.

There are so many ways to get involved this chilly season.  Please feel free to contact us with questions, concerns or ideas; we are delighted to engage a community that cares!
Sincerely,
Shelter House, Inc.
