A Festive Holiday Season Warms Shelter House, Inc.
Our Community Comes Together to Brighten Our Families' Lives

ULNV YPN Christmas 2008In December, both Shelter House, Inc.'s Patrick Henry and Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelters held their annual Adopt-a-Family holiday events.  The program includes providing gifts for Shelter House, Inc. families through community sponsorships and a festive holiday event to bring families together. This year attracted over 70 donors for both shelters with a total of over $20,000 in gifts!

At the Patrick Henry Family Shelter, the Annual Client Holiday Party got off to a great start with the help of Shelter House volunteers Marty and Ira and the Urban League of Northern Virginia's Young Professionals Network.  Kids made candy cane reindeer while feasting on turkey, mac & cheese and veggies courtesy of DC Central Kitchen and delicious and beautiful cakes donated by the Virginia Chapter of the International Cake Exploration Societé.  And of course there was a visit from Old Saint Nick for photos and laughs!
Cakes! At the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter, the Adopt-a-Family program included a special shopping day for parents to personally select gifts for their children, a children's activity hosted by Old Dominion Cotillion that included making decorations and decorating cookies and a photo booth staffed by EDS where families could take a portrait and decorate frames.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our Holiday fun; your generosity has warmed countless hearts.

Life Skills Create Strong Families
A Success Story from Our Community

Ms. Johnson* and her three boys entered the shelter after losing her housing when she became sick and was unable to work for over a month. Ms. Johnson was able to obtain employment while on the shelter waiting list, however, was unable to save enough money to obtain housing on her own. Upon entering the shelter, Ms. Johnson began working with her Case Manager and the Housing Resource Coordinator to create a monthly budget and search for viable housing for her and her children.  In just 23 days, Ms. Johnson was able to save $1,300, maintain her employment, work with the Mental Health Counselor to obtain services for her children and attain permanent housing. The shelter was able to assist Ms. Johnson with her first month's rent. Ms. Johnson has decided to participate in community case management in order to coninue receiving services such as money management groups and to participate in other activities in the future.

Clifton Elementary
Clifton ElementaryClifton Elementary School may not be a large school, but they showed they have a big heart during their Kitchen-in-a-Box collection for Shelter House, Inc. last month.  Supported by the PTA, classes set out to fill checklists of dishes, pots & pans, utensils, cleaning supplies, and other necessities so that our families moving out of the shelters into their own apartments will have all the essentials they need.  In total, the school filled FIFTEEN Kitchens-in-a-Box, putting our families on the fast-track to self-sufficiency.  We thank the students and staff of Clifton Elementary School for their generosity and look forward to working with them more this spring!
Cindy Seeley
Cindy Seely and FriendsMs. Seeley made and donated 50 children's blankets to four of Fairfax County's homeless shelters. Shelter House was a recipient of 20 of the them. Her donation provided a soft, warm, comfort to children at both of our family shelters. Cindy is a cancer survivor and she created this way of giving back in honor of those who helped her through her struggle.  Shelter House, Inc. is grateful for Ms. Seeley's thoughtful donation and admires her strength and humility.
Montessori School of Holmes Run
Shelter House, Inc. has worked with Montessori School of Holmes Run in the past, but this year, they took big strides to help us even more.  The students at MSHR had their families and friends sponsor them in a Lap-a-Thon.  The children walked to raise money for Shelter House, Inc. programs.  In total, MSHR raised an incredible $2700!  MHSR also participated in our Adopt-a-Family program this year providing gifts to three of our families.  The students and staff of this incredible school are changing lives and Shelter House is truely grateful.
Simon Elementary
Simon ElementarySimon Elementary School is located in Congress Heights in Washington, D.C. and is Shelter House, Inc.'s DCPS partner in the Help the Homeless Walk-a-Thon.  This year, to commend the service that Simon Elementary has done for us, Shelter House donated toys to underserved children at the school, helping to spread holiday joy throughout the region.
Simon Elementary was also recently featured on the Oprah Show as part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  Target and MTV donated books and computers to improve the school and students were treated to a special guest appearance by Usher and an appearance on the Oprah Show via satellite.  CONGRATULATIONS to an amazing community partner!
2009 is going to be a tough (though hopeful) year for nonprofits all over the region and througout the world. Consider the many ways you can help, from volunteering to engaging your company in Shelter House event sponsorship.  You can also give to us through your workplace giving programs: United Way #8699 and CFC #56516.  If we all do a little, we can all make it through the tough times to a bright and prosperous tomorrow.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Shelter House, Inc
