Shelters

Shelter House operates emergency shelters across Northern Virginia, providing safe refuge and supportive services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence.

Katherine Hanley Family Shelter (KHFS)

KHFS opened in 2007 and was the first emergency shelter in Fairfax County to adopt a rapid re-housing approach. Located in Fairfax, this 62-bed program has the capacity to serve 24 families at a time.

Artemis House (AH)

AH is Fairfax County’s only 24-hour emergency shelter serving victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking and human trafficking. This 83-bed program consists of two 24-hour undisclosed locations (AH Region 1 and AH Region 3) providing comprehensive services to help survivors safely flee and stabilize after their traumatic experiences before transitioning to safe housing.

Eleanor Kennedy Shelter

Eleanor U. Kennedy Shelter is a 50-bed shelter for 38 men and 12 women, located in a historic building on Fort Belvoir grounds outside the Tulley Gate. The shelter opened in 1986 and was originally known as the South County Community Shelter. Shelter House began operation of the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter since November 2025.

Fair Ridge Shelter (FRS)

Fairfax County’s Department of Housing and Community Development, together with the Board of Supervisors and Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA), converted a former hotel into shelter space for families experiencing homelessness. This 300+ bed shelter facility, operated by Shelter House, opened on April 1, 2025.

Mondloch House

Mondloch House provides shelter for 8 single adults who are chronically homeless and have significant mental health needs. Mondloch House was designed using the “Housing First” approach. Shelter House began operation of Mondloch House since November 2025.

Loudoun Homeless Services Center

In February 2022, Shelter House assumed operation of the LHSC. The LHSC provides 24-hour emergency shelter for individuals and families, in addition to offering a Drop-In Day Program for adults experiencing homelessness. During the winter months, the LHSC also provides Hypothermia shelter for adults.
